Police: 717 traffic citations, two arrested near protest site

Police assigned to the Thirty Meter Telescope protester blockade and encampment on Maunakea Access Road for the past six weeks wrote the largest number of traffic citations in the week of Sept. 19-25 during enhanced traffic enforcement on Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Highway 200).

According to police, officers issued 717 traffic citations and arrested two suspects for four offenses during the seven-day period.

The 717 citations were categorized as follows: speeding, 342; excessive speeding (30-plus mph over limit), four; seatbelt violations, 31; child restraint violations, seven; use of cellphone or electronic device while driving, four; excessive window or windshield tint, 40; driving without a license, 15; driving without insurance, 21; unsafe vehicle, 38; other moving violations, 14; no license plate, 22; and regulatory violations, 179.

Police say no parking tickets were issued in the past week.

The two arrested individuals were charged with contempt of court and failure to appear.

The combined total of the six-week-long Daniel K. Inouye Highway enhanced traffic enforcement effort stands at 3,501 traffic citations issued and 37 people arrested for 61 offenses.

Police say the project will continue for the duration of the ongoing protest situation for the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
