During the week of Aug. 10-16, 2020, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Four were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo and Puna, seven each; North Kohala and South Kohala, two each; and Ka‘u, one.
So far this year, there have been 574 DUI arrests compared to 702 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.2%.
There have been 481 major accidents so far this year compared to 598 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.6%.
To date, there have been 12 official traffic fatalities, compared to 13 fatalities at the same time last year, a decrease of 7.7%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
