LIHUE — Police are investigating a hit-and-run incident that occurred Friday night near 7-11 in Hanamaulu.
On Friday at approximately 9:15 p.m., officers responded to reports of a man lying on the side of Kuhio Highway in Hanamaulu. Upon arrival, officers determined that the man had been struck by a vehicle, which had fled the scene.
The victim was airlifted to Queens Medical Center in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 28, despite life-saving efforts. He has been identified as Alfred Lopes, 42, of Hanamaulu.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident, a 2021 Chevrolet pickup truck, which displayed visible damage consistent with a pedestrian collision, was later identified as Tiffany Jeffries, 36, of Hanamaulu.
Jeffries was arrested for negligent injury in the first degree, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury, and inattention to driving.
She was released pending further investigation, which is referred to as “RPI.” An RPI means that more time is needed, beyond the maximum 48 hours allowed in police custody, to investigate the case before formal charges are made.
This is Kauai’s fifth traffic fatality of 2025 and remains under investigation.
