HANAPEPE — With just a single game facing Kauai High School football on Saturday, the Red Raiders picked up their first league season victory, 21-0, on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation games played at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Playing in Kauai’s final home game of the season, the Red Raiders split their outing against Waimea High School when the Junior Varsity team dropped a disappointing 8-7 contest to the Menehune. The difference in the contest was Waimea’s decision to go for the two-point point-after-touchdown.
The Red Raider JV was cheated out of a go-ahead in the fourth quarter when a Menehune defender, Kailen Rapozo, intercepted a Kauai JV pass in the end zone and ran the clock to an 8-7 edge.
Under the hot Hanapepe sun and Kalaheo winds, Red Raider senior Jacob Bukoski scored two touchdowns, and quarterback Jonah Javinar added one in the 21-0 win.
Waimea’s offense, powered by Ikaika Miyashiro, was stopped by Kauai’s defense.
Kauai scored early when Bukoski broke free for a 35-yard touchdown. Chance Kawakami added the PAT with 9:34 left in the quarter.
Bukoski struck again in the second quarter when a 5-foot-7 wide receiver found the end zone at the end of a 3-yard carry. Kawakami’s PAT boot with 3:28 showing on the break gave Kauai a 14-0 bulge.
Javinar ran in a 3-yard touchdown with 50.7 seconds before halftime. Kawakami’s PAT gave Kauai a 21-0 lead, which held after a scoreless second half.
The win moves Kauai High School to two wins and six losses, including a 22-12 preseason win over Kwansei High School of Japan.
Kauai next plays Kapaa High School (5-1, including preseason) on Saturday at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium. Kickoff for the JV game is scheduled for noon, with the varsity contest starting about 30 minutes following the end of the JV game.
Waimea High School drops to three wins, four losses, including its preseason, where the Menehune finished with one win and one loss. Waimea will close the KIF regular season on Nov. 1 when the Menehune hosts Kapaa during the Menehune’s combined Homecoming and Senior Night at Hanapepe Stadium. The JV game kicks off at 4 p.m.
