Red Raiders get big win in Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball

LIHUE — Victories by the Kauai High School and Kapaa High School girls volleyball teams on Friday set up a crucial meeting on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball matches.

Playing against Island School, Kapaa, according to ScoringLive.com, won the Voyagers in three straight sets, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-18. According to the school’s Athletic Trainer, the Lady Warriors have not lost a set since the KIF season started earlier on Sept. 2.

No scores were available for the junior varsity contests between Kapaa and Island School. Over at the new Kauai High School gymnasium, Kauai High School JV were 2-1 winners over the JV Menehune, 25-18, 25-19 and 6-15.

On the varsity courts, the Lady Red Raiders took the Lady Menehune in straight sets, 25-10, 26-24 and 25-14. The Red Raider win earns Kauai its third victory in four outings with two games remaining during the KIF second round. During the first round, the Raiders enjoyed one win and five losses.

Kauai pulled away from a 6-4 advantage in the first set when Leila Caoagas coughed up back-to-back aces in the string that settled the Raiders with a 10-5 edge. Camryn Yates, getting an ace in a string served to 18-6, received support from hits by Emily Wyszogrodzki, Emma Badua and Zariah Fernandez.

Chloe Pascual, also marking two aces in her string that brought Kauai to a 23-9 lead, got support from Caoagas and a Menehune net violation. Caoagas moved the Raiders to Point 24, and Fernandez sealed the 25-10 win.

During the second set, Kauai posted a 10-4 lead before Waimea started clawing back and pulling to a 10-12 deficit behind a pair of Raider hitting errors.

Menehune Cailey Delanoza-Vea took the service block with a pair of aces in her four-point delivery that gave Waimea its first lead of the night, 22-21. Kauai tied the contest on a Menehune hitting miscue, and Alyssa Gummerus served to 24-22 on a Milana Schaefer whack.

Kauai answered the deficit when Caoagas, Noelani Garcia, and Wyszogrodzki whacked out the 25-24 win.

Raider Coach Shyanne Sadora also made several changes to her lineup that maximized each player’s touch. Some of those changes include moving Wyszogrodzki from middle to the outside hitter puka, and getting Yates to put more attention to the middle for more touches. Caoagas’ hitting was cut back to maximize her playing time on the court, and Fernandez realized that pushing the ball was more effective than hitting hard.

Kauai High School takes on Kapaa High School on Tuesday when the Raiders travel to the Bernice Hundley Gym. Waimea travels to the Wilcox Gymnasium to take on Island School.

At both sites, the JV game serves up at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest starting 25 minutes after the JV game ends.
