NAWILIWILI — The Kauai Chamber of Commerce got help from Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami and other dignitaries in presenting $10,000 to five students during the 11th Mayor’s Luncheon at the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort.
Carly Dela Cruz of Kalaheo graduated from Kauai High School in May and is heading to Corban University. Zaylee Doi-Desmaraia of Lihue also graduated from Kauai High School and is registered with the Wake Forest University. Leia Mokiao-Higashi, also of Lihue, is the third student who graduated from Kauai High School. With her scholarship, she will be heading to the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Rayko Farias of Kapaa is one of three students graduating from Kapaa High School that received their Associates degree before hitting the high school graduation stage. She is heading to the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Clancy Doorish Jr. of Kalaheo is a Waimea High School graduate and will be attending the Kauai Community College in the fall.
Kawakami, who has county connections with several of the scholarship recipients, was assisted by Kauai Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mark Perriello who described the luncheon audience as being the biggest one at more than 350 people in 11 years.
Kauai Chamber Board President Laurie Yoshida was joined by Miss Kauai Filipina Khiani Garcia who only recently earning her crown in June.
For many of those attending, this was the first big occasion that took place in one of the island’s resorts. It was the first time the Pacific Missile Range Facility Commanding Officer Capt. Robert A Prince has had to bring his staff out into the community following the highly successful Morale Welfare and Recreation-coordinated America’s Most West Freedom Fest.
The Kauai Chamber of Commerce, communicating through its weekly Wednesday electronic mailings, will next host the 27th annual Governor’s Luncheon on Aug. 11 at the Koloa Landing Resort, home of the Kauai Poke Festival.
