Cheryl Shintani of the Friends of the Koloa Public and School Library said there were so many people waiting in line on Tuesday, they were afraid to open the doors to the used book sale.
“We were real busy,” said Shintani, who is also a Koloa Plantation Days board member. “These were new shoppers. If you are a Friends member, you. could shop on Monday when we were setting up. Today, it’s all new shoppers.”
Adding to the parking congestion, teachers were at work at the neighboring Koloa Elementary School.
Koloa Library’s involvement with the Koloa Plantation Days is not limited to the used book sale. Instead, there are a series of demonstrations in the morning, and more demonstrations in the afternoon as part of the library’s Summer Reading Challenge.
“The sale continues on Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m., and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Shintani said. “Plus, kihoalu guitarist Jeff Peterson is going to help sell some of his CDs after his presentation with the Summer Reading Challenge. The library closes at 4 p.m., and we’re here until 5 p.m.”
Additionally, Shintani said all DVD titles are available at no cost.
Over at the Koloa Plantation Days Heritage Craft Fair that was taking place at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, Kahalau Leoiki provided the sounds from the stage at the Seaview Terrace where the audience was stoked by the Primary Care convention taking place in the ballrooms.
“We’ve had a good crowd,” said Amy Christmas, who makes their own Hawaiian gift baskets featuring various parts of Hawaiian palms garnished with other naturally occurring plants. “The Koloa Plantation Days, celebrating its 40th year, was my very first craft fair I don’t know how long ago. This year, I won’t be able to participate because we take care of the Grand Hyatt Kauai twice a week.”
A few tables down the aisle leading to the Seaview Terrace, Dean and Sandi Remata of Aloha Edibles said they will be participating as a craft vendor on Saturday at the Koloa Plantation Park Celebration.
“I’ll be there,” Sandi said. “I don’t know about Dean. He said he was going to a reunion.”
More shopping and a Chef’s Demo is available today, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Kauai Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukuiula.
Shintani said there are more than 70 vendors signed up to participate with food vendors, and other exhibitors for the park celebration that opens from 2 until around 8:30 p.m.
The historic parade starts at 3 p.m.
