Spectrum awards help digital education

LIHUE — Spectrum awarded a total of $25,000 in grants to local organizations on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Spectrum presented a $5,000 grant through its Spectrum Digital Education program to Ho‘ike Community Media, Inc. during Ho‘ike’s final day of screening with students who utilized iPads to create visual presentations during the Ho‘ike’s Youth iPad Video Production Bootcamp.

On Saturday, Spectrum presented a $20,000 Digital Education Grant to the Laulima no ka ‘Ohana group (also known as Regenerative Service Kauai) on the Spectrum class/workshop on Kupuna Tech Support.

The grant to Laulima no ka ‘Ohana is specifically aimed at educating community members, including families and kupuna who have historically been underrepresented, on the benefits of broadband, and how to use it to improve their lives.

Spectrum, in a press release, said the grant to Ho‘ike Community Media will allow Ho‘ike to expand digital literacy and media production by integrating iPads into its training program. iPads will be available for free rental, providing kupuna and students the opportunity to practice video editing, animation, and content creation at home.

Youth can develop and share their own projects, while kupuna gain confidence in using technology. The portability of iPads will also bring training to underserved areas, ensuring lasting impact and continued learning beyond their facility.

“We are so thankful to Spectrum for supporting digital education here on Kauai,” said Allegra Gaines, the president and CEO of Ho‘ike Community Media. “This grant helps us provide access, training, and hands-on experience to keiki, kupuna, and everyone in between, ensuring our community can share their stories and thrive in today’s connected world.”

Now in its eighth year, Spectrum Digital Education continues to support initiatives that make a tangible impact in communities. Since launching, Spectrum Digital Education has awarded 383 grants, helping to distribute nearly 20,000 laptops and sponsor more than 45,000 digital education classes, benefiting nearly 188,000 community members nationwide.
