St. Michael’s is grateful for first responders

LIHUE — Members of the St. Michael’s and All Angels Church delivered handmade, personalized pies to 19 different first responder stations around Kauai on Thanksgiving Day.

“Peach, apple, pumpkin, cherry pies!” said John Etherton of St. Michael’s. “On Thanksgiving morning, members of St. Michael’s Church delivers homemade pies to all 19 stations of Kauai’s brave fire, police and emergency first responders as a way of thanking them for their faithful work on Thanksgiving Day.”

Etherton said it is fitting for the parish to do this because St. Michael is the patron saint of healthcare providers and first responders.

“This offering matches the parish’s strong, clear outreach mission, including its Loaves and Fishes food ministry, and other community efforts,” Etherton said. “The church believes in the kokua values that keep Kauai strong and a safe place to live. All are welcome to join in our continuing efforts to do so.”

The Loaves and Fishes outreach ministry has been in place in various forms since the late 1980s, states the church’s website. The current coordinators include the church’s Senior Warden Deann Megonnell and Deacon Mary Margaret Smith, who used to be at the All Saints Church in Kapaa, which was part of the Interfaith Council of Kapaa that fed more than a thousand people each Thanksgiving.

Twice each month, a group of about 18 volunteers work to deliver food to those who are in need through a food distribution at the Vidinha Stadium parking lot.
