Sunday fire destroys Honokaa home

A fire Sunday morning destroyed a Honokaa home, according to a Hawaii Fire Department statement.

Nine units responded to the 9:10 a.m. alarm, with the first unit arriving on scene at the Opuhe Road residence at 9:15 a.m.

Responding firefighters found the house heavily involved with fire and found the blaze difficult to extinguish because of dense vegetation preventing access and the home’s split-level construction.

The house fire was reported under control at 10:30 a.m. and extinguished at 12:30 p.m.

According to the statement, firefighters’ “quick actions and hard work saved the detached carport and vehicle located inside as well as prevented the spread of fire to a nearby residence.”

According to the statement, the loss is estimated at $146,250, while property value saved is estimated at $16,250.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
