Taking a moment for Charlie Kirk

PUHI — About a hundred people started the Peaceful Charlie Kirk Memorial on Friday at the west end of the Kauai Community College entrance at Puhi Road.

Another much smaller group occupied the Kilohana entrance near the gate that closes from 4:30 p.m.

“This is a peaceful vigil,” said Steve Yoder. “Bring your own signs. We support Free Speech, not Hate Speech.”

Among the initial gathering of people that kept growing as people were let out for the weekend, Kauai Community College instructor Gregory Shepherd said he was a quiet protester.

“I’m one of the organizers of today’s peaceful Charlie Kirk memorial,” Shepherd said in an email. “I have twice requested that the executive board of the Kauai Community College Faculty Senate issue a statement re-enshrining freedom of speech and fairness to all viewpoints as foundational cornerstones of education. So far, I have not heard back from them.”

The author and composer of “Siddhartha: Seeker of Truth” said this is only the start of the rally that continues through 5 p.m. He said a lot more people said they are coming after 4:30 p.m.

Alfred Sarmento of the Hawaii Christian Voters said in an email that the assassination of Charlie Kirk has moved America and the world.

“Charlie walked into a lion’s den to engage peacefully with young students,” Sarmento said. “We need to celebrate his life as a martyred Christian, and work daily to eradicate the hate that has gripped a substantial portion of our country and the world.”

Charlie Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.
