Time out sets up Kapaa win in Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball

KAPAA — Kapaa girls volleyball coach Paea Tafea knew when to call a badly-needed time out on Friday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball games played against Kauai High School at the Bernice Hundley Gym.

Trailing 17-20 at the hands of the Red Raiders, Tafea called the huddle to settle the Lady Warriors, who, up to the time out, were exchanging points with the Raiders. Kauai was looking to bounce back following a Wednesday loss in five sets to Waimea.

The Warriors took the full minute, and the results of the time out poured onto the floor as Kapaa held Kauai to just a point for the rest of the set while peeling off eight points for the 25-21 win in the first set.

Rolling on that momentum, Kapaa girls continued to roll and took the second set, 25-11, and the third set, 25-14, when Chloe Woodward came off the bench and got to experience court time.

Kauai, trailing 9-10 in the first set, got Chloe Pascual in the service block to serve up six straight points to a 15-10 lead. That string included a pair of Warrior miscues and whacks from Red Raiders Noelani Garcia and a block before back-to-back hammers from Kapa‘a senior Carlyn Kamoku saw the Warriors chasing a point.

Following the time out, Kapaa’s Welina Carvalho-Brede took the service block and served up eight points to a 24-20 lead. The string of points included a block, a pair of whacks from Jenniver Guerin, and a Ku‘uipo Hunt hammer before Kauai’s Navaeh Smith got the side for Kauai.

Hunt sealed the deal for Kapaa, 25-21.

In the second set, a Guerin hit, and the Raiders getting a multi-hit call settled the scoreboard to a 9-5 Kapaa lead before Guerin took the service block to a 15-7 lead behind whacks from Kamoku and Hunt. A pair of net violations against Kauai, and a Hunt hammer sealed the second set, 25-011.

Kapaa pulled away from a 13-9 lead in the third set when Mandy Gokan served up six points 10, 18-9 lead. The string included hits from Hunt, Woodward off the bench, and Kamoku before the Warriors turned the ball over on a hitting error.

Kamoku settled the points see-saw with a hit that sealed the 25-14 win.

During the Junior Varsity matchup earlier in the afternoon, Kauai High School took the Warriors, 23-25, 25-18, and 15-11.

Island School downed the Menehune in straight sets on Thursday, the contest being played early because the Voyagers had other commitments on regular game night.

Kapaa next travels to the Clem Gomes Gym to take on the Menehune on Tuesday when the Junior Varsity contest serves up from 5 p.m., and the varsity game starts 25 minutes after the JV game.

Kauai High School will host the Voyagers at the new Kauai High School gymnasium when the JV games serve up from 5 p.m., followed by the varsity matchup.
