Dozens of protesters opposed to the Thirty Meter Telescope gathered at a meeting of the University of California’s Board of Regents on Thursday to demand that the UC system end its partnership with the project, according to the Daily Californian, UC Berkeley’s student newspaper.
Both Caltech and the UC system are members of the TMT International Observatory, the group seeking to build the telescope on Maunakea, which some Hawaiians believe is sacred.
One of the organizers of the protest was Lanakila Mangauil of Honokaa, according to the paper. He was joined by students from various schools in the UC system.
“We’re here to inform you that the people of Hawaii will not accept this anymore,” said Mangauil, according to the paper. “I ask this body to re-instill that money … and take care of your own students.”
After speaking at the regents’ meeting, the protesters reportedly held a press conference and rally, and performed chants and hula dances.
