Trees get a voice before the Council

LIHUE — The trees on Poipu Road will be on the agenda of the Oct. 15 Kauai County Council meeting, according to Council Chair Mel Rapozo.

Rapozo said the item will be one of the first items discussed, and in consideration for kupuna who plan to attend, Rapozo said the council will address the matter starting at 8:30 a.m.

Rapozo was at the Fire Prevention Week community education event on Saturday and asked about the meeting he had with community residents who were not happy to learn about the removal of about 40 trees along Poipu Road. Rapozo met with the group on Tuesday afternoon at the site near the Poipu roundabout.

The decision to have the trees removed stemmed from a community development project that was put into place to improve pedestrian access from the resorts to the Kukuiula shopping areas when the Poipu roundabout was constructed. The issue remained dormant until residents learned the removal was scheduled to start on Oct. 1.

Rapozo said there were some emails expressing concern from area residents, and his meeting was in response to those emails.

An unhappy resident identified the tree as a Golden Trumpet Tree, or Tabebuia chryssotricha. It is the same tree that grows out in Waimea and splashes the town yellow when in bloom.

Rapozo said he contacted the contractor and worked to have the removal process paused until after the Oct. 15 meeting.
