LIHUE — The outdoor Trunk or Treat event scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Kukui Grove Center was moved to the safety of the shopping center due to the uncertainty of the weather front that signalled the transition of the dry season to the wet season.
Partnering with The Resilience Project, Keiki to Career, and various community partners, Kukui Grove Center presented the family-fun activity as the highlight of a weekend filled with Halloween holiday activities. The fun included an age-group costume contest, shopping center-wide trick or treating, special appearances by Showtime Characters, a seasonally themed educational exhibit by the Kauai Community College Cognition Learning Center, and more.
With Halloween looming at the end of the week, there are more activities waiting to spring into action.
On Thursday, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa hosts the Howloween Canine Costume Contest on the front lawn, the same place the resort hosted its bon dance. Open to the public, registration starts at 2:15 p.m. with the contest starting at 2:30 p.m.
Entry fee is a donation for the Kauai Humane Society’s Pet Food Bank, and prizes will be awarded for the pets from Natural Pet Hawaii. People prizes will also be awarded for judging categories that include Cutest Costume, Scariest Costume, and Best Pet and Owner Themed costume.

Within earshot of the stage at the food court area, Cruz Control provides free lunchtime sounds of the season from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ahead of Aloha and Freaky Friday safe trick or treating.
Saturday, on the heels of Halloween, the Kauai Landscape Industry Council and its community partners celebrate Arbor Day in Hawaii by giving away native and non-native trees for people to plant in their home gardens. The free tree giveaway takes place from 9 a.m. to noon, or until supplies are exhausted, at the same parking lot as where the Pau Hana Market takes place.
Finally, the Kalaheo Dental Group, located in the Rainbow Plaza in Kalaheo, will wait until Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. to host its 10th annual Halloween Candy Buy Back of unopened Halloween candy.
The Kalaheo Dental Group will pay keiki a dollar a pound up to a 5-pound limit, and all candy donors become eligible for the drawing of a $100 gift card from Small Fry Kauai, located in the Kukui Grove Center adjacent to the Kauai Society of Artists gallery.
With the help of The UPS Store in Kukui Grove, the purchased candy will be combined with toothbrushes and shipped to the Armed Forces through Operation Shoebox.
