Kauai’s own Tumoana with Nicholas Kaneakua as its director, or kumu, was named overall winner of the two-day Heiva I Kauai that wrapped up Sunday at the Kapaa Beach Park.
“It was real busy,” said Cheryl Shintani, who was chaperoning the volunteers from the Key Clubs from the high schools. “Especially on Saturday when the heiva combined with the fire knife competition. It was a long day that didn’t end until past 11 p.m.”
Sintani said what added to the color was the amount of costuming from the individual dancers on Saturday.
“It was very colorful,” the advisor said. “I don’t know if they had rules about each dancer having to create their own costume, or if they could get help in putting the costume together.”
Adding to the color and excitement were the cultural tents and the variety of local craft vendors, including several that came from Tahiti with their assortment of unique Tahitian items including pareau, jewelry and other Tahitian crafts.
Greg Askew, a member of the organizing committee, said many were surprised when the Polynesian Cultural Center drummers appeared on Saturday to perform with the fire knife competition and host a workshop on Sunday.
“We were thrilled,” said Lyah Kama-Drake of the iSiva Fire Knife, or the Drake ‘Ohana. “We had more than 30 contestants registered, including three women.”
Results of the fire knife competition that followed as a separate show after gates to the heiva closed were not available at press deadline.
