Two women killed in separate Saturday traffic crashes

Two women died after separate early morning single-vehicle collisions Saturday.

Alexandria R. Hofferbert, 23, of Kailua-Kona was pronounced dead at 3:14 a.m. Saturday in Kona Community Hospital. Police say she ran off the right shoulder of the road at the intersection of Kaiminani Drive and IliIli Street and struck a light pole and rock wall in a 2000 Saturn sport-utility vehicle about an hour-and-a-half earlier police said.

Hofferbert wasn’t wearing a seat belt, according to police.

Police say 63-year-old Jane Lawrence of Laupahoehoe was southbound on Highway 19 at about 4:50 a.m. Saturday when her 2006 Honda Civic veered across the center line and struck the Kaieie storm bridge guardrail in Papaikou.

She was pronounced dead at 5:05 p.m. at Hilo Medical Center.

Autopsies have been ordered in both collisions.

Anyone who witnessed either crash is asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

The deaths were the 12th and 13th traffic fatalities on the Big Island in 2020.
