The Island School Voyagers girls volleyball team improved to 1 win, 1 loss following the Voyagers win over Waimea High School in straight sets on Thursday at the Wilcox Gymnasium.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Menehune Junior Varsity, exuding with school spirit controlled the JV Voyagers, 25-13, 26-24 and 9-15.
The deflating school spirit carried over to the varsity squad, victorious over Kauai High School in five sets on Tuesday. The Menehune dropped in straight sets, 22-25, 18-25 and 22-25 at the contest that was re-scheduled due to Island School having other arrangements on the traditional Kauai Interscholastic Federation game night.
The Voyagers, playing under new coach Courtney Uyeda, dropped to Kapaa High School in straight sets on Tuesday, and turned the tables on Thursday when the Voyagers led for the first set.
Trailing 23-17, Waimea’s Alyssa Gummerus served up five straight points to pull to within a digit, 22-23 before Island School’s Preslie Lanini delivered back-to-back whacks to seal the deal, 25-22. In that final string of points, Waimea marked a block and a pair of whacks from Milana Schaefer and Siena Lau.
Waimea took the lead, 10-9, off a Voyager hitting error in the second set, but could not sustain the momentum as the Voyagers answered when Maiha Kjeldsen served up a string of six points, including an ace, to pull Island School up 15-10.
The Menehune has no answer for the remainder of the night, pulling as close as 22-24 in the third set before Island School’s Grace McAnarney put everything away.
After dropping to Waimea in five sets on Tuesday, Kauai High School will meet Kapaa High School at the Bernice Hundley Gym to set the stage for next week when the KIF hosts the OC16 television cameras on Thursday for girls volleyball, and on Friday at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium for the Kapaa High School homecoming football contest.
