KAPAA — The Kauai Interscholastic Federation girls soccer season kicked off on Tuesday with a contest matching the Island School Voyager women against the Kapaa High School Lady Warriors at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium.
The Voyagers capped the season-opening contest with a 3-1 victory that came with a pair of goals in the second half without any of the National Weather Service-forecasted rain, wind or thunderstorms.
Island School struck first, getting a header in the net off a corner kick in the first few minutes of the match. With three minutes remaining before the break, Kapaa’s Marie Daligdig deadlocked the contest, 1-1.
Following the halftime, Island School goals in the 44th minute and the 52nd minute clinched the win that came on goals from the Ayonon sisters — Chloe and Cruz — and Sydney Manibog.
“Oh, my God,” said the girls’ grandma, Cyndi Ayonon. “Cruz scored, and they each got a goal. Today is Bobby’s (the girls’ grandfather) birthday. This was his birthday present.”
The next KIF girls soccer contest takes place on Nov. 25 when Kauai High School girls host Waimea High School at the Hanapepe Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
The Kauai High School girls junior varsity team hosts the Kapaa JV girls on Nov. 26 with a 4 p.m. kickoff at Hanapepe Stadium.
The first boys soccer contest is scheduled for Dec. 6 when the Kauai High School boys meet Island School boys at the Island School field, starting at 2 p.m.
