LIHUE — The Waimea High School boys bowling team made history at the Thursday season finale of Kauai Interscholastic Federation bowling at the Kauai Bowl in the Rice Shopping Center.
The participating KIF member schools added to the excitement of Waimea boys earning their first KIF championship by honoring their respective senior bowlers.
“This KIF season was by far one of the most exciting in recent memory,” said Kauai High School Coach Kyrin Sasaki. “Kapaa, Kauai and Waimea boys entered the last match in a must-win situation for the KIF race that came down to the very last frame of the season. Waimea’s first-ever boys title. Additionally, this season saw the first-ever Kanuikapono bowling team enter the KIF.”
Kauai High School girls, earning the KIF title earlier in the season, demonstrated the team’s prowess on the lanes by sweeping all three matches, and finishing with an evening-high 2,021 total pinfall, and 12 points.
“Win early,” said Kapaa Coach Kevin Gusman. “When I had my strong girls bowling team, we did the same thing — win early in the season.”
During the battle for the boys’ title, Kauai High School started strong by taking the first match on a 915 pinfall behind Jason Polloi’s 211 game, 14 pins ahead of Waimea who collected a 901 pinfall behind the high game by Javis Moises who rolled a 202, his highest score of the night. Kapaa finished third with an 896 pinfall, just six pins behind the Menehune.
Fueled by the momentum generated in the first game, Waimea came back to win the second match before finishing the night with a second place finish in the third frame that was won by Kapaa High School boys behind the high score of its William Kimura who rolled a 215 game.
Kauai High School boys finished second in the night’s second match, and fell to a third place finish in the final match to end up tied with Kapaa at seven points apiece.
“Congratulations to the Kauai High School girls, and all of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state qualifiers,” said Waimea High School Boys Head Coach Nick Pananganan. “Congratulations to all of the seniors on such a memorable season.”
