LIHUE — Waimea High School girls basketball and Kauai High School girls basketball teams were victorious on Monday during the latest series of games played at the Wilcox Gymnasium on the Island School campus and at the new Kauai High School gymnasium.
Joining the winners, the Kapaa Junior Varsity girls posted a 29-22 win over the Kauai JV at the KHS gym. Ginger Nunes posted a game-high dozen marks, including a trio of treys, to pace the victory. Kauai JV’s Kaimi Miyasato finished with 11 points, including a three-ball, to top the Red Raider effort.
On the varsity court, the varsity Red Raiders picked up its first season win, 45-39 over the Lady Warriors behind the high pointing of Jazlyn Corpuz who finished with 17 points, including a pair of treys. Kamryn Welling added 14 points, including a pair of three-balls.
Kapaa’s Trinity Guillen finished with a game-high 20 points in the effort, and tall person Tyra Carvalho added seven marks.
Over at Wilcox Gymnasium, the audience swelled to watch Waimea outrun the Lady Voyagers, 65-36, behind the high pointing of Katelyn Constantino who posted a game-high 24 points and a lot of hustle on the floor. Constantino launched a trio of three-balls toward her night’s total.
Menehune guard Hailey Mata added 14 points.
Lady Voyager tall post Halia Vicoy-Fuimaono topped the Island School scoring with 12 points, tying with freshman Breyanna Alfonso who launched a trio of long-distance bombs en route to finishing with 12 points, including a plus one in the final frame.
Island School stayed close from the opening tipoff, and with just ticks remaining in the first stanza, took the lead when Alfonso launched her second bomb to push the Lady Voyagers up, 15-14 at the buzzer.
However, Coach Natalie Mata settled the Menehune in the pause, and the Lady Menehunes swarmed the second quarter with 14 points — led by treys from Constantino and MJ Angala — while holding the Lady Voyagers to just six points from two treys launched by Kailea Sokau-Masulit and Alfonso.
Exhaustion began taking its toll on the Lady Voyages in the third quarter when Waimea out-paced Island School, 19 points to the Lady Voyagers’ 10 marks. Waimea continued to blister the nets, finishing with double-digit production throughout the night.
The next girls basketball games play on Friday when Waimea visits Kauai High School, and Island School makes the trip to the Bernice Hundley Gym to face Kapaa.
