KAPAA — The Kapaa High School girls volleyball team locked up the Kauai Interscholastic Federation first round on Friday by defeating the Waimea High School squad in three sets at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Over at the Wilcox Gymnasium located on the Island School campus, the KIF first round shaped up as Island School, winning the Junior Varsity match, 19-25, 25-5, and 25-5 over Kauai High School. settled the battle for second place by downing the Red Raiders, 25-17, 25-21, and 25-23 in three straight sets.
Back at the Bernice Hundley, Kapaa won both sides of their matches against Waimea as the JV wahine won the first two sets — 25-17 and 25-21 — before dropping the rule-shortened third set to the JV Menehune, 9-15.
On the varsity floor, the Warriors came prepared to play and walked off the court with scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-17 behind the hitting of Kapaa seniors Carlyn Kamoku and Ku‘uipo Hunt, and the Menehune struggling to get its passing game going.
Kapaa coach Paea Tafea, a former Kapaa player, had her anchors, including Kamoku, Hunt, Jenniver Guerin, libero Mandy Gokan, firmly rooted. She spiced up the makeup from the bench to harden the reserves throughout the three sets while relying on the go-to’s to cap any uncertainties.
Waimea had its hitters ready, including senior Milana Schaefer, junior Cailey Delanoza-Vea, and junior Alyssa Gummerus, but the backrow stuttered and the hitters struggled to find good whacks.
During the first set, a passing error by Kapaa knotted the contest 19-19. A Menehune bang knotted the contest, 20-20 before Kamoku and Hunt went into action to seal the deal, 25-21.
Kapaa found the rhythm with its bench additions and kept Waimea on the chasing end. The closest Waimea came was in the third set when a Kapaa hitting error pulled the Menehune to within two points, 13-15, before the Warrior front line took over. A Menehune service error sealed the deal.
With the win, Kapaa finishes the first round with an undefeated 6-0 record. Waimea falls to second place with a 3-3 record followed by Island School at 2-4. Kauai is at 1-5 with a lot more volleyball to play.
According to the KIF calendar, the next girls volleyball games take place on Sept. 30 when Kauai High School takes on Waimea at the Clem Gomes Gym, and Kapaa takes on Island School at the Wilcox Gymnasium. The JV games serve up from 5 p.m. at both sites with the varsity contests starting 25 minutes after the JV games end.
