KAPAA — Kapaa High School quarterback Kaitin Mundon ran for two touchdowns in the Warriors’ 28-0 win on Friday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation football game against Kauai High School at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium that was aired by the live telecasting OC16 video team.
Additionally, the Warriors exploded for three touchdowns, including Mundon’s second 21-yard score of the night, and the game-ending 65-yard fumble recovery return by Siotami Malafu, in the fourth stanza.
Mundon, who scored his first touchdown — a 49-yard breakout on Kapaa’s first possession — in the first quarter, topped the Warriors’ offense according to information from scoringlive.com. The quarterback completed one pass in three attempts for 35 yards, and ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
Amanaki Tuulangavalu, who chalked up Kapaa’s third score, ran for 35 yards. His touchdown in the fourth quarter accounted for 15 yards.
Devon Green sparked the Kapaa defensive efforts with six tackles and more than three quarterback sacks. Malafu had the fumble recovery for touchdown and five tackles. Zaimana Labanon and Takazee Thomas chalked up five tackles apiece, and Leia Jerves finished with one unassisted stop in his three stops.
The Warrior defense held Kauai to 141 total yards on offense with Red Raider quarterback Mana Inouye passing for 115 yards connecting with Karter Reichle for 47 yards and Special Teams turned Receiver Jacob Bukoski for 47 yards.
On the ground, the petite Asa Bailey could not get his shake and bake going after being held to just a yard. Instead, Jonah Javinar and Chance Kawakami combined for 25 yards.
Defensively, the Red Raiders, with the exception of an early-game hiccup, held Kapaa to just a touchdown and two failed field goals for three periods before the floodgates opened.
Paoa Itamura, playing both sides of the ball, recorded a game-high nine stops, five being unassisted. Mikemund Jose had two unassisted stops in four tackles, and Jonah Javinar, another Raider playing both sides of the ball, finished with an unassisted stop in five tackles.
On the junior varsity field, Kapaa High School wrapped up a 28-6 win over the JV Red Raiders.
The Kapaa victory sets the stage for Saturday’s showdown in the Hanapepe Stadium against Waimea High School. The JV contest kicks off at 4 p.m. with the varsity contest starting 30 minutes after the JV game ends.
