HANAPEPE — Kapaa High School, the defending Kauai Interscholastic Federation football champions from last year, and the KIF Division I representative, swept both ends of their double-header against Kauai High School football on Saturday.
The Junior Varsity Warriors opened the night with a 51-0 shutout over the JV Red Raider, and a last-gasp defensive play kept the Varsity Red Raiders from being shut out, 28-7.
Trailing 28-0 and the game clock threatening a shutout, Kauai High School’s Zion Sarmiento recovered a blocked punt inside the end zone with less than a minute remaining in the contest.
Chance Kawakami, blocking the punt that resulted in the touchdown, smoothly booted the Point After Touchdown as the buzzer sounded on the 28-7 final in favor of the Warriors.
Kapaa opened the night in Hanapepe Stadium by capitalizing on their first possession of the contest when Kaisen Mundon pushed 3 yards into the end zone for the opening score. Warrior Yair Antonio did the PAT boot honors for the 7-0 bulge.
Late in the first quarter, Warrior defender Devon Green corralled a loose ball on the Raiders’ 39-yard line to set up the second score that came in the second quarter when Warrior. Alakai Pigao-Mundon found the end zone at the end of a 7-yard scamper. The Antonio PAT kick upped the scoreboard reading to 14-0.
As the clock ticked down to the Red Raider Homecoming celebration, Kapaa picked up another fumble recovery by Bryden Sugai-Salvador on their own 48-yard line to set up the second TD in the quarter.
Kapaa quarterback Kaitin Mundon capped that drive on a 4-yard keeper for touchdown with 2 minutes, 16 seconds showing until the break. Antonio’s boot gave the Warriors a 21-0 bulge heading into the locker rooms following another fumble recovery by Leia Jerves with 1:11 showing, and a pass interception by Takazee Thomas.
Coming back in the second half, Kapaa stymied another Kauai scoring effort when Brayden Bermoy, this year’s Warrior Homecoming king, plucked a Jonah Javiar pass in the end zone to set up Kapaa’s touchdown in the last quarter.
Pigao-Mundon capped the 80-yard drive with a 5-yard lunge to paydirt, and Antonio’s PAT kick displayed the 28-0 bulge with 2:52 remaining in the game.
Kapaa High School football, to date allowing just a touchdown apiece to Waimea High School and to Kauai High School, will host Waimea High School on Saturday at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium.
Because of the no-light ruling due to the seabird fledging season, the JV game will kick off at noon followed by the varsity contest kicking off 30 minutes following the end of the JV contest.
