Kapaa High School football built up the momentum for Saturday’s meeting with Waimea High School by sweeping the Red Raiders on Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation football games played at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Park stadium.
In the final minute of play, Junior Varsity Warrior Kalani Miyashiro broke for 20 yards in the humidity to score. Justin Cortado, with 57.3 seconds showing, iced the 22-0 shutout over Kauai High School.
The Varsity Red Raiders had the option of receiving the opening kickoff and announced itself early when quarterback Jonah Javinar hit Paoa Itamura with a 12-yard pass in the end zone to capitalize on its opening possession.
Kapaa promptly answered when Warrior QB Kaitin Mundon found Maanaki Tuulangavalu at the end of a 2-yard strike. Yair Antonio put Kapaa up 7-6 with the point after boot.
Kaisen Mundon upped the ante in the second quarter by scoring on an 8-yard carry with 21 ticks peeled off the second quarter. Antonio’s boot put Kapaa up 14-6 at the break.

Kauai QB Javinar threw for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also added 17 yards in rushing. But Javinar suffered four pass interceptions, three coming in the fourth quarter that, when combined with a Tuulangavalu 19-yard score, gave Kapaa its 20-6 final.
Kaitin Mundon threw for 69 yards and a TD, and rushed for 32 yards. Top rusher was Isaiah Konishi who plugged for 59 yards.
Top defender was Sami Kauvaka who marked three tackles and a fumble recovery. Takazee Thomas also marked three stops.
Following Javinar, Manu Inouye added 9 yards on the ground, and pulled in 52 yards in the air.
Top defender was Mikemund Jose with seven stops, and Inouye with three tackles. Drake Javier and Asa Bailes also ended with three stops.
Waimea, currently 2-3 in the KIF, will host Kapaa, currently 5-0 in the KIF, on Saturday in the final KIF regular season contest at Hanapepe Stadium. The Menehune will also celebrate Senior Night as well as Homecoming when the JV game kicks off starting at 4 p.m. The varsity game starts 3-0 minutes following the JV game.
