West Kaua‘i Lions host traditional in-person event

HANAPEPE — The West Kaua‘i Lions Club was awarded the Stellar Award for the club’s “many significant contributions to the community” under the leadership of Past President Basilio Fuertes.

The award was shown by current president Kay Hill during the In/Out Social that was held in-person and in compliance with social distancing at Wong’s Restaurant in Hanapepe.

“The In/Out Social is a time honored tradition,” said Lion Eric Nordmeier. “This is a time for current president Hill to introduce herself and speak about her goals for the 2020-2021 Lion year.”

Those goals include leading the club through the COVID-19 pandemic and its many directives in place, to meet and serve the community through the performance of community service projects.

This follows in the footsteps of Immediate Past President Basilio Fuertes who also served as Region I, Zone I Chairperson who presented the group with a recap of the 2019-2020 Lion year.

Under Fuertes’ leadership, the WK Lions Club made many significant contributions to the communities, including the distribution of free hand sanitizers to kupuna following the novel coronavirus affecting the lives of Kaua‘i residents with its resulting Stay at Home directives.

“Under his leadership, the WK Lions made many significant contributions to the communities that resulted in the club being one of six clubs in the state to be awarded the District’s Stellar Award,” Nordmeier said. “Lion Kay is up to the challenge. A retired educator, Lion Kay is quick to adapt to the changing times and to lead the members of the West Kaua‘i Lions Club.”

Joining the festivities that included members of the East Kaua‘i, Koloa, and Kaua‘i Lions clubs, Leslie Uri, the recipient of the West Kaua‘i Lions Club scholarship, brought her siblings and family to the traditional modified gathering where the WK Lions presented her with the $1,000 scholarship.

The West Kaua‘i Lions Club is part of the world’s largest service organization, and invites anyone interested in public service to contact its membership chairperson, Lion Basilio Fuertes, at email Basilio.Fuertes@yahoo.com.
