12 Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis players advance to states

Three member schools of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation will be represented at the 2025 Island Insurance Hawaii High School Athletic Association Tennis State Championships when play starts on May 8 at the Lahaina Tennis Courts, Lahaina Civic Center on Maui.

Following play at the 2-day qualifying matches that were played at the Kapaa High School and Kauai High School tennis courts, Waimea will have one player participating in state play. Kapaa High School will send two players, and Kauai High School will have eight players advancing to state play.

In addition to qualifying for the state tournament, the tennis play also determined the top Central Pacific Bank/KIF champions, and semifinalists for the Boys Singles, Girls Singles, Boys Doubles and Girls Doubles divisions.

The qualifying players for the Boys division making the Maui trip include Ryan Murata of Kapaa, Swede Sandblom of Waimea, and Aaron Hinazumi and Shousei Kai from Kauai High School. Kapaa players going to Maui include Luka Lasky-Martin and Kainoa Danner.

For the Girls Division, Kauai High School will send Taylee Yoshimoto, Mia Marty, Laney Carvalho, Samantha Tominaga, Lily Corpuz and Ashley Chan for an all-Red Raider contingent.

On the Boys Doubles arena, the No. 2 and No.4 seeds were upset going up the ladder that was taken by the top seeded pair of Shousei Kai and Aaron Hinazumi of Kauai defeating the No. 3 seeded team of Luka Lasky-Martin and Kainoa Danner of Kapaa, 62, 2-6, 6-3.

On the Girls Doubles floor, the top seeded duo of Taylee Yoshimoto and Mia Marty downed the No. 2 seeded Red Raider pair of Lily Corpuz and Ashley Chan go claim the CPB championship, 6-1, 6-1.

Top-seeded Murata of Kapaa downed No. 2 seed Sandblom of Waimea, 6-4, 7-5 for the CPB/KIF championship following a long, drawn-out outing in the hot Kauai High courts on Friday. During the bracket play, the No. 3 seed, Edison Medina of Waimea was upset by Louis Reale of Kapaa who fell to Sandblom. The No. 4 seed, Bodhi Czarske of Island School, fell to Max Wolken of Kapaa who was defeated by Murata in the quarterfinals.

On the Girls Singles floor, Samantha Tominaga surprised everyone when the unseeded Red Raider upset the No. 3 seed Lilah Hamid of Island School to meet the top-seeded Laney Carvalho. Carvalho earned the top female individualist honor by defeating Tominaga, 6-0, 6-1.
