A 100th birthday and reunion celebration

KALIHIWAI — James “Jimmy” Uemura celebrated his 100th birthday on July 30, 2022, at Kalihiwai.

The centennial event was hosted by his three daughters: Sandy (Tyrone) Oyadomari of O‘ahu, and Linda (Steven) Fountain and Susan (Gerald) Takamura, both of Kaua‘i.

Jimmy Uemura has been blessed with seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, making it six generations of Uemuras. This also ended up to be a reunion, where all the families gathered together in one place for the first time.

A luncheon was enjoyed by all, with food catered by Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors. His birthday cake was topped with 101 candles to celebrate this momentous occasion. The fun-filled day concluded with some magic acts by the celebrant, which he performed especially for his great-grandchildren.

Being 100 years old, he continues to live an independent life at his home in Isenberg Tract subdivision in Lihu‘e, surrounded by his neighbors of almost 60 years.

He has been enjoying numerous trips to Japan and is looking forward to the 2023 Snow Festival in February and autumn foliage tour in May. During these trips, he hopes to bring his daughters with him and introduce them to his favorite spots in Hokkaido.

He attributes his long life to keeping active, both physically and socially.
