About 150 gather to ‘make good trouble,’ protest Trump actions

About 150 people friendly to Kauai Indivisible showed up on Thursday afternoon with signs and American flags as Kauai joined the rest of the nation in honoring U.S. Rep. and civil rights leader John Lewis.

Thursday marked the fifth anniversary of Lewis’ passing. The rally along Kaumualii Highway fronting the mauka end of the Kukui Grove Center made a little “good trouble” while celebrating the person described on a sign as the character of light.

There was no central speaker, but signs indicated people’s unhappiness with various Trump administration actions ranging from immigration, tariffs, cutbacks to education and more. Others demonstrated the importance of protecting democracy.

Kauai Indivisible member Bevin Parker-Evans balanced registering voters with holding up a rally sign.

“This is surprising,” Parker-Evans said. “We are registering voters. Rallies are a good place to find voters because we usually average about a hundred registrations at each rally. The mayor’s office is planning to do something about honoring the high school students who led a high school rally where they found more than 300 new voters.”

Margy Merryman of Kauai Indivisible had the sole Hawaiian flag, and joined other sign-wavers from California who stopped at Ace Housemart to get supplies to create signs for the rally.

“Kauai Indivisible continues to hold these protest rallies to allow the Kauai community to speak out about the federal cutbacks to the Department of Education, to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, to national parks and wildlife, to Medicaid, and others that we already have and will continue to affect us on Kauai,” said Mary Lu Kelley of Kauai Indivisible.
