Aina Ho‘okupu O Kilauea pumpkin giveaway Friday

KILAUEA — Aina Ho‘okupu O Kilauea is hosting a free carving pumpkin giveaway tomorrow at its Kilauea location beginning at 5 p.m. and then again on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The giveaway will continue while supplies last, with half of the pumpkins being reserved for Saturday.

AHK Executive Director Yoshito L’Hote expects that the center will have 200 to 300 pumpkins for the giveaway.

Expected carvers are invited and to walk the fields with their families and pick out their own pumpkin that were donated by the Kekaha Agriculture Association, Corteva Agroscience and Hartung Brothers.

“We are very thankful to (these organizations) for donating pumpkins and sharing with the North Shore,” L’Hote said, noting that pumpkins grow much better on the western side of the island.

Carving pumpkins are not the only pumpkins to move through the AHK farm.

“We also did receive at least 1,000 pounds of eating pumpkins which is the butternut squash, spaghetti squash, and kombucha squash,” said L’Hote.

The eating pumpkins were distributed over the last two weeks in AHK’s weekly food deliveries which provide free fresh produce primarily to Native Hawaiian communities in need.
