Alcos, Grand Hyatt win Poipu Rotary Mixed league opener

KOLOA — Eight mixed league softball teams took to the lights at the Koloa Ball Park, more formerly known as the Anne Knudsen Park, on Jan. 14 to open the Rotary Club of Poipu Mixed Softball League.

Participating teams include Alcos Painting, Sheraton Kauai, Grand Hyatt, HBY, Team L.A., Smiley’s Team, Toots Ohana and Pure Aloha.

“This is an adult mixed league requiring three wahine on defense,” said Michael Curtis of the Rotary Club of Poipu. “Games are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday evening starting at 7 and 8 p.m. at the Anne Knudsen Park. Each team plays once a week.”

The first games of the season was won by Alcos Painting over Sheraton Kauai with a TKO, or technical knock out, score of 15-3, Curtis said.

“Alcos wahine Red Scovel and Kiki Pagadore led the charge, both on offense and defense,” Curtis said.

“The second game was an exciting drama unfolding as home team The Grand Hyatt made a heroic comeback to outscore the HBY team, 17-16 in the bottom of the last inning. The Hyatt team is newly organized while the HBY team has been playing together for some time. Kudos to manager Kristine Mazalan who brought together a diverse team, several new to the sport.”

The Poipu Rotarian said the Koloa community came out for the opening night with many attending to share the camaraderie of the evening.

“There was a small passing shower that didn’t dampen anyone’s enjoyment,” Curtis said.

The Grand Hyatt will take on Sheraton Kauai starting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 21. Alcos Painting will meet Team L.A. in the 8 p.m. nightcap.

On Jan. 23, Pure Aloha meets HBY at 7 p.m. followed by Smiley’s Team going up against Toots Ohana at 8 p.m.
