Along the Andes: The quest for quinine to combat malaria

The National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kauai Community College’s collaborative “Earth Matters” public lecture series continues at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at KCC. Dr. Nina Ronsted, director of science and conservation at NTBG, presents a talk drawing on her fieldwork in the foothills of the Andes mountains in a quest to better understand the anti-malarial quinine bark. Ronsted will discuss how combining traditional knowledge and evolutionary history can lead to the discovery of new, plant-based medicines.

“Earth Matters” lectures are held in the KCC Campus Center cafeteria near the Performing Arts Center.
