Arizona State leads after first round of golf at The Donnis

NAWILIWILI — Arizona State fired a team total 280, or 8-under par, on Sunday to take the lead at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational that is being contested at the Ocean Course at Hokuala.

Following a stroke back, Sacramento State finished with a 7-under 281. North Carolina is in third place at 6-under.

Host University of Hawai‘i women’s golf finished in 14th place with a first-day 307.

Mattingly Palmer, an individualist from Texas State led the individual golfers with a 6-under 66.

She is followed by a three-way tie for second place between Camille Boyd of Washington, Megan Streicher of North Carolina and Ella Kraft of Sacramento State. Each of the golfers finished the first day of the 54-hole tournament at 5-under 67.

Ashley Menne is the top individualist for the leading team Arizona State. She finished the opening round in sole fifth at a 4-under 68. Menne shot 3-under 69, tying four ways with Madison Le of Long Beach playing as an individualist, Lorena Rossettin of Rutgers and Amelia Garibaldi of Fresno State.

Emiko Sverduk, finishing 3-over 75 on opening day, leads the University of Hawai‘i, followed by Wendy Song finished with a 4-over 76.
