KEKAHA — Local authorities are turning to the public in hopes of identifying a body found at a makeshift campsite in the vicinity of Second Ditch — by a surf spot commonly known as Targets.
Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) personnel responded to a call of a person found deceased at the campsite, which was located under a thick canopy of kiawe trees, according to a preliminary report on Dec. 16. Hawai‘i Department of Conservation and Resources Enforcement also responded to the scene.
“The decedent had long hair, but was unrecognizable due to the advanced stage of decomposition,” the KPD said on Tuesday.
“The decedent was wearing green and white surf shorts with floral designs, pants with camouflage designs, and a T-shirt with a University of Georgia emblem.”
An autopsy was completed on Dec. 26. Preliminary results indicate the decedent’s gender as possible being male. No signs of foul play are currently suspected, and there have been no missing person reports filed recently with the KPD.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the decedent should call KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. People wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i at 808-246-8300.
