Ava Anderton wins top prize in Mokihana Club music competition

LIHU‘E — The Mokihana Club recently presented three high school graduates with scholarships to help them pursue music studies after high school.

Ava Anderton took the first-place prize of $2,000, followed by Veda Parker in second place ($1,500), and Asher Griffith in third place ($500).

Auditions were held at the club’s monthly meeting in April at the Lihu‘e Parish Hall on the grounds of Lihu‘e United Church, and members voted on the winners.

Anderton, who graduated from Island School, played the “Mozart Sonata in C Minor” on piano.

Parker, who graduated from Hawai‘i Technology Academy, sang a piece by Stephen Sondheim, accompanied by Monica Chung on piano.

Griffith, a Kaua‘i High graduate, played two pieces on piano — “Root Beer Rag” by Billy Joel and “Laputa-Castle in the Sky” by Joe Hisaishi.

Money for the scholarships comes from the Mokihana Club’s fundraising efforts.
