Bash bounty helps food bank

POIPU — There was so much food collected at the Holiday Bash Friday evening the cars belonging to the volunteer crew from the Kauai Independent Food Bank could not accomodate the load at The Shops at Kukuiula.

“I picked up one of the filled containers, and it was so heavy, the container was cracking,” said Kelvin Moniz, KIFB executive director. “We just arranged to have the drivers pick up the load.”

The confirmed weight of the collection amounted to 1,089 pounds.

Stacie Chiba-Miguel, manager at The Shops at Kukuiula, also dug into the treasury to add an additional $1,000 award to the collection.

Voting done via canned goods for the Christmas Tree Battle Royale closed on the day of the third annual Holiday Bash that brought together Santa, performers from Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina‘ala, and the John Rivera Collective.

The count was close among the 17 participating Christmas Tree Battle Royale vendors, with the eventual winner, Coldwell Bankers Island Properties, coming through on Friday.

The special Holiday Food Drive by The Shops at Kukuiula was also joined by other community groups adding to the cache of holiday bounty as the Cub Scouts of Pack 148, sponsored by Lihue Christian Church, collected 135 pounds of food, and $7 in monetary contributions during its annual canvassing earlier this month.
