Big crowd for KIF wrestlers at Kapa‘a High

KAPA‘A — Fifty-eight wrestlers weighed in at Bernice Hundley Gym during the latest Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation wrestling matches, the second of the season that was greeted with a nearly full house at the gym located on the campus of Kapa‘a High School.

The 58 wrestlers resulted in 54 bouts in 16 bracketed divisions, said KIF Wrestling Director Coach Mac Pigott.

“Participation remained high despite the longer drive, and stormy conditions for most of us,” Pigott said. “A lot of us left the westside in the dark, extra early in caution of the wet roads because at time, there were heavy downpours.”

“Kapa‘a newly-remodeled gym was bright with the new LED lights and fresh paint,” Pigott said. “Kapa‘a hosted another great tournament. Like the Jan. 14 matches, the tournament ran fast with about 13 matches taking place per hour.”

The fastest pin of the day went to De’Andrei Gonzales of Waimea High School, who took the match in 18 seconds.

The longest match of the day belonged to Casey Bernabe of Kapa‘a High School who won her class with a match over Ambrie Rocha of Kaua‘i that went sudden death overtime of 6 minutes, 4 seconds.

“Some rivalries from last season, and some first-year wrestlers are making their marks and set the tone for the day,” Pigott said. By next week, more wrestlers will be settling into their weight classes and a picture of what the league championships will be better developed.”

The next KIF wrestling matches take place Saturday at Kaua‘i High School gym where wrestlers check in at 8 a.m., and the first bouts hit the mat around 10 a.m.
