Boroboro Boutique and more during Memorial Day

LIHUE — Inspired by the artwork from the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School students, a group of young people on Saturday spent a great deal of time chattering and drawing out their feelings at the interactive wall set up at the Kauai Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center.

“This is the final day of the show,” said Greg Askew, who was gallery sitting for the show coordinated by artist Leslie Frasier. “Leslie comes on the last shift to wrap everything up.”

Frasier said the week-long show of CKMS student art has been drawing crowds, especially during the first weekend when she recorded audiences numbering more than 500 people. Having the interactive wall where people can artistically express their feelings, and a station where people could acquire student-built memorabilia like bookmarks, Christmas tree ornaments and felt rocks, were part of the success.

As the door closes on the CKMS Art Show, another interactive show — the Garden Island Arts Council presents the second annual Boroboro Boutique Pop-Up Show and Craft-a-thon — that will open on Saturday and run through May26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the KSA gallery.

“Our theme is focused on upcycling and waste diversion through art,” said Shannon Hiramoto of Machine Machine, who created a resurgence of interest in muumuu to the extent of the muumuu having its own month of celebration.”The three-day event also serves as fundraising for Ka Pae Aina O Hawaii Nei mosaic mural project. This 80-foot mural will be installed at the Kilauea Lighthouse. Fun, fun, fun!”

Hiramoto said there will be lots of demonstrations, hands-on arts stations and of course, the popular Boroboro Boutique Pop Up Shop where the public can buy pieces created by “those ladies who show up to sew at my house,” said GIAC artist Carol Yotsuda.

“We have two artists — Monika Mira and Abigail Boroughs — being joined by Alison Fraley from the county’s waste management office on Saturday, May 24 from 5 p.m.,” Hiramoto said.

Boroughs is the artist who found little people in marine debris that gave birth to the Kauai Society of Artists’ “Washed Up” Marine Debris Art Show that coincides with World Oceans Day. Mira has been a featured artist in the Washed Up show for several years, and prior to that, created marine creatures for The Storybook Theatre.

During the three days of the Memorial Day weekend, there will be a sewing machine station where volunteers will be sewing on site, creating new items for the Boroboro Boutique.

Kathleen Ho, the lead on Ka Pae Aina O Hawaii Nei mural project that will be installed at the Kilauea Lighthouse, will be on site to talk about the GIAC community art project, and Carol Yotsuda will be demonstrating her unique art form of drawing with thread.

Additionally, there will be work stations on paper box making, patch making with a letterpress machine, printmaking on fabric, mini fashion design, and aina pigment painting.

In addition, there are a pair of fee-based workshops that require registration: Handmade Notebook Workshop and Sashiko Stitching Workshop. Registration can be done online, and more information on the interactive weekend can be found at www.handmadekauai.com.
