Brent Torres is Kapaia Foundation scholar

KAPAIA — The Kapaia Foundation has announced the selection of Kaua‘i High School graduate Brent Torres as recipient of its 2020 scholarship award.

At Kaua‘i High, Torres was an active member and leader of the Key Club, serving as president and secretary during his four years of service to the community. He also participated in paddling, Cyber Patriots, Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, robotics and science fair.

His passion is STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research.

His innovative scientific projects included harvesting electrical energy from soil microbes, creating solar sails and capturing primary energy from ocean wave.

He will be attending the University of Portland Shiley School of Engineering.

The Kapaia Foundation Scholarship was created to recognize the dreams of sugar-plantation-era immigrants for the success of their descendants.

Torres’ relatives, including his great grandparents, immigrated to Hawai‘i from the Philippines, settled in Puhi and worked for the Lihu‘e Plantation Company.
