Broken cable causes internet outages

KAPAA – Many Kaua‘i residents were without internet Wednesday as Spectrum responded to a broken land-based fiber-optic cable, according to a company spokesman.

And the problem could continue through Thursday.

At around 3 p.m. Wednesday, Spectrum’s tech spokesperson said a team was sent out at 7:30 a.m. to fix the cable. The spokesperson did not know the location of his team or where the cable broke, but he did get a notation on his computer that said they were trying to fix it by noon.

“The techs are trying to get it up and running. The first time they thought it could be resolved by 12 p.m. It’s already past noon. Fiber lines have intricate details, any thing including mold can break it, and it takes time to fix,” said the spokesperson, citing probable natural causes to the break, like weather.

He said the Spectrum team is hoping to get it fixed by today.

More information will be reported as it becomes available.
