Bus driver rescued in Ka‘u flooding

Hawaii Fire Department personnel came to the rescue of a 72-year-old woman whose school bus stalled early this morning after she attempted to cross a flooded Highway 11 at Kawa Flats in Ka‘u.

According to a written Fire Department statement, the call came in at 12:13 a.m. Three units and Hawaii Police Department officers responded, with the first unit on scene near the highway’s 59-mile marker at 12:26 a.m.

The bus driver needed no medical attention.

A flash flood warning remains in effect throughout the day and there are several road closures due to flooding and other issues caused by weather conditions.

Highway 11 remains closed between the 58- and 62-mile markers as of this morning.
