Cheer champions crowned

LIHUE — Eight of the 12 performances at the Kauai Pop Warner Football League island cheer competition Sunday earned eligibility to the National Pop Warner Cheer and Dance competition.

Performing to a capacity audience at the Kauai High School gym, the islandwide competition showcases the accomplishments of the Pop Warner Football cheer squads in age divisions that started with cheer camp in August.

The Kekaha Titans Junior Varsity, Level 3, small division girls finished with the share of wins, taking not only its category, but continuing to real the Highest Stunt Score at 14.83 points, the Highest Jump Score at 10 in difficulty, and 1.9 in execution, and securing the highest score of all participating teams at 90.62 points in the day.

According to volunteers with the Kekaha Pop Warner Association, the Kekaha Titans JV, Level 3 girls are going to Orlando, Florida to compete, and hopefully, bring home the hardware.

“We last went to Florida in 2017,” the volunteer said. “We did well, earning the national title in Junior Varsity 3, Medium. We took a break in 2018, so now, we’re ready to return to Florida, and hopefully come home with a win.”

Fundraising to get the Kekaha Titans’ cheer and PeeWee football team that earned its right to advance with the division championships two weeks ago, already started when the Titans hosted a car wash Saturday at Kukui Grove Center.

Other teams, including the Hanapepe Colts cheer, were busy at the Harvest Ag Festival.

The Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships feature more than 500 of the nation’s top youth cheerleading and dance teams competing at the ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida from Dec. 7 through 14.
