CHRISTMAS FUND: Fixed income seniors hoping for an iPad

LIHU‘E — Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families and individuals (we don’t use their real names), who are facing challenges and would appreciate a little help this holiday season.

The Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance. Donations are used by Zonta Club members to purchase gift certificates that are in turn distributed to families and individuals through social-service agencies.

Each donation is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrative costs involved, and money goes directly to provide for those in need of Christmas presents and groceries.

If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund, let us know and we’ll spread the word. Anyone making a donation of $200 or more can have their picture published in TGI.

Also, for every $250 donation given to the Christmas Fund, Hale Uluwehi Charitable Foundation will match up to $5,000.

Donations may be made by way of the website, Zonta-Kaua‘, or checks can be made payable to The Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation, P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766.

The following are some stories we would like to share with our readers.

• Mary and Joe are seniors living off a fixed income. Mary takes care of Joe, who is bedridden. The couple’s children live off island and haven’t been able to visit for a couple of years. This holiday it would be special to provide Mary and Joe an iPad for them to Zoom or Facetime with their loved ones.

• Jenny is disabled and unable to work. Jenny lives alone in her family’s house. However, she still finds it difficult to make the bills as she lives off a limited fixed income. Jenny enjoys going to the beach and collects shells that she makes into art. This holiday it would be nice to provide Jenny with some jewelry making supplies.

• Maile is a super senior. Maile loves to be sociable and to get together with her fellow seniors. With all her family off island the holiday’s tend to be a little lonely as all her fellow seniors usually are with their families. This holiday it would be nice to provide Maile with a way to be with her loved ones, a roundtrip ticket would be an amazing gift.
