Concert in the Sky yields winners

Ricky Carveiro’s mom had to show picture identification to Ron Wiley Thursday during the Kauai Hospice Concert in the Sky at the Vidinha Stadium soccer fields.

Carveiro was announced as the winner of the grand prize Las Vegas trip for two sponsored by inpac. The prize includes roundtrip airfare from Honolulu for two, five nights hotel, hotel transfers and meals for two.

As a fundraiser for Kauai Hospice, the Concert in the Sky grand-prize registration was limited to the hours of the family fun event that featured a wide range of food, food trucks, entertainment, crafters, and the perennially popular Keiki Fun Zone, where keiki lost little time in taming the hot afternoon heat.

Leilani Mindoro was named the winner of the trip for two anywhere Alaska Airlines flies. This was the secondary prize for the event that drew thousands of people pouring through the field gates as the sun settled and the time for the King Auto Center-sponsored pyrotechnics drew near.

David Arzadon — was he related to the Arzadon Industrial Park, Wiley wanted to know? — walked away to the front row of the stage after being named the winner of the weekend stay at the Princeville Resort in a contest hosted by the KQNG Radio Group. Wiley has been emceeing the event for the past 30 years.

Other winners included the thousands of people who flocked to the fields to listen to T Flatz and Friends of Maui, one of the Friends’ sister is a nurse for Kauai Hospice, and Kimberly Hope who, while making her debut appearance at the concert, was invited by Kapena, the featured group, to join the ensemble in a special number before the fireworks.

Tricia Yamashita, the acting executive director for Kauai Hospice, was event coordinator, with Jojo Kawamura serving as the event facilitator. Bo Domingcil secured the help of firefighters and other Kauai Fire Department personnel as the logistics coordinator, and Vianne Tabata tooled around in her golf cart as volunteer coordinator.
