Dick Ueoka scholastic awardees get drive-through honors

LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League has been waiting patiently for the COVID-19 pandemic to go away.

With no football games, practice or cheerleading activities to fill the KPWFL calendars, the league has been helping with food distributions and other special community distributions like the Great Pumpkin Giveaways and the more-recent Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank turkey distribution, where coaches represented Kaua‘i football officials through the Kaua‘i Officials Association.

“I apologize that we did not get these 2019 Dick Ueoka Scholastic Excellence Awards out sooner,” said Blaine Agena, the KPWFL scholastic coordinator and commissioner.

“We were waiting to see if we had a jamboree to present these awards in front of a full stadium. However, due to the current COVID-19 situation, we will be having a drive-thru awards presentation Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Vidinha Stadium parking lot.”

KPWFL students qualifying for the 2019 Dick Ueoka Scholastic Excellence Awards include Nicholas Gandeza, Ambrieal Kanahele, Kody Erdmann, Brennen Fernandez, Kyren Toma, Duke Alderette-Labuguen, Naia Gordon-Medeiros, Tristan Raposas and Nia Pablo.

“We ask that you enter the Vidinha Stadium parking lot through the four-lane dividing section and drive to the tent that will be set up near the stadium scoreboard. Please ensure that the scholar is wearing a face mask. If you feel comfortable, they can come out of the vehicle to receive their award and get their picture taken,” Agena said.

“If they don’t feel comfortable, they can receive their awards through the window and get a photo taken in the car before driving off.”

During the presentation, all KPWFL league and association representatives will be wearing masks, and hand sanitizers will be utilized between presentations.

Only one scholar will be allowed at the tent at one time.

KPWFL league and association representatives will be at the stadium until 11:30 a.m.
