DOH reports 10 new COVID-19 cases on Big Island

Hawaii Island had 10 new COVID-19 cases Monday, according to the state Department of Health.

Seven people were hospitalized as of Monday, and 49 deaths have been reported on the Big Island since the start of the pandemic.

Hawaii Island has had an increase in community-caused cases of coronavirus, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

“Recent tests on Hawaii Island clearly show that the coronavirus spread is due to close gatherings, especially of young people and of families,” Civil Defense reported.

Tests in the past week show that of the 33 who tested positive, 14 were below the age of 25 and four were below the age of 10.

“This cluster of young people has been identified in the Hilo District,” Civil Defense said.

Statewide, there were 114 new COVID-19 cases reported Monday.

Hawaii on Monday had a 2% test positivity rate, the second-lowest in the nation.

Vermont had the lowest test positivity rate at 1.5%, according to Johns Hopkins University.

By comparison, Wyoming had the highest positivity rate, 58.9%, followed by South Dakota (44.1%), Iowa (43.1%) and Idaho (40.1%).

Positivity rate is the percentage of all tests administered that come back positive.

Nationwide, there have been more than 12.4 million COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, and more than 257,000 deaths.
