Duals preview the KIF wrestling championships

WAIMEA — Forty-nine wrestlers weighed in on Saturday during the rain and wind, punctuated with bouts of lightning and thunder, during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation modified duals wrestling matches at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.

“We’re lucky this is an indoor sport,” said Waimea High School Athletic Director Jon Kobayashi. “If this was an outdoor sport, there’s no way this could’ve been played.”

The field of wrestlers presented 24 bouts in 14 divisions, with Ambrie Rocha of Kaua‘i High and Shawn Parraga of Waimea High getting the fastest pins of the day, at 39 seconds.

“Several of the matches went all three rounds,” said KIF Tournament Director Coach Mac Pigott. “This was the last chance to preview how the league championships will pair up, this Saturday at the Bernice Hundley Gym at Kapa‘a High School. I’m expecting to see some hotly-contested matches to see who gets the individual league titles and berths into the state championships that will contest Feb. 24 and 25 on O‘ahu.”

Wrestlers start weighing in from 8 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a brief ceremony celebrating the 10th anniversary of KIF wrestling on Kaua‘i. The first matches should be on the mats by 10:30 a.m.
