Fishing on Father’s Day in Nawiliwili

NAWILIWILI — Prizes are the keyword to the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Keiki edition of the Father’s Day Fishing Tournament, which will unfold at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor area on June 16.

“We’re back!” said this year’s tournament chair Rhan Honjo, who also serves on the Race Committee of the weekly NYC Shoreline Series of yacht races.

“As in the past, prize contributions are always welcome to satisfy the prize appetite for all those keiki fishers. Donations are also extremely helpful to fill the prize bag with gifts. What is different with this year, is donations are new tax deductible. All donated prizes will be collected from June 10 through 14.”

Checks can be mailed to Nawiliwili Yacht Club, P. O. Box 3661, Lihu‘e, Hawai‘i 96766.

On fishing day, keiki get registered from 10:30 a.m. at the Kaua‘i Sailing Association building. Fishing takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with the awards taking place up to 1 p.m.

“NYC members carefully supervise the waterside activities for safety and cleanup,” Honjo said. “They also measure, categorize and search for the fish with the unique prize winning attributes of biggest fish, ugliest fish, cutest fish and anything else that ensures keiki have a great fun day.”

Registration fee is $5 per fisher and includes lunch of a “yacht dawg” and soft drink. Additional “yacht dawgs” and beverages are also available for non-fishing family members. The registration fee also qualifies the fisher for prize drawings that include rod-and-reel combos, soccer balls, tackle boxes and toys.

The NYC Father’s Day Keiki edition fishing tournament was started in 2005 and has flourished with the strong community support for building families and keiki character building, while enjoying the fun and excitement of fishing.
