Following 3-year absence, Miss Kaua‘i Filipina returns

The Miss Kaua‘i Filipina Scholarship Pageant returns to in-person, live action Saturday, June 18, at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall, announced the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council.

Following nearly three years of not being able to have a pageant, the KFCC said tickets for the scholarship pageant are available now through June 1 from the pageant’s contestants — Shai Lein Acosta of the Hawai‘i Technical Academy, Kiele Casillas, who just graduated from Kaua‘i High School, and Xarika Casticimo of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.

“When I became Miss Kaua‘i Filipina, I was just getting into college,” said Isabel Gampon, the reigning Miss Hawai‘i Filipina. “Now that I’m able to pass on the crown, I’m graduating from college.”

When Gampon was selected Miss Hawai‘i Filipina, the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina’s crown was passed on to Tiffany Sagucio, the 2019 pageant’s first runner-up.

“I’ve had this crown for so long,” Sagucio said. “It is time for someone else to learn and grow with this title.”

Online ticket sales are not being accepted for this year’s pageant that, in addition to the pageant competition, will be a tribute to the late Jose Bulatao Jr. and the Bailes de Jose dance troupe he left behind.

“If you are not able to purchase from our candidates, you can buy from any of the KFCC officers, the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina committee members, or any Filipino affiliated organization members,” said Letty Ruiz, co-chair of the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina pageant. “We will also be selling tickets at the door on the night of the pageant.”

Doors to the pageant open at 6:30 p.m., and the program starts at 7 p.m.

Among the list of prizes available to the pageant contestants, the winner of the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina crown becomes eligible to compete in the Miss Hawai‘i Filipina pageant that will be held later in the summer, hosted by the Hawai‘i Filipino Community Council on Hawai‘i Island.
