Hanama‘ulu shooting suspect arrested

LIHU‘E — A suspect was arrested in connection with a shooting in Hanama‘ulu earlier this week.

Duane Dawson, 53, of Hanama‘ulu, was taken into custody on April 11 after a warrant was issued for his arrest, the Kauai Police Department (KPD) said. The KPD worked with the U.S. Marshal Service to apprehend Dawson. He faces multiple charges in connection with the incident, including assault in the first degree, Fifth Circuit Court records show.

The charges stem from a shooting on Monday, April 8, at approximately 12 a.m., in which a 28-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound. The man, whose name was not released, was medevaced to Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu.

The victim, who was initially listed in serious condition, was treated and later released.

“KPD would like to thank the public for their cooperation,” said Assistant KPD Chief Kalani Ke in a statement. “We’d also like to thank the U.S. Marshal Service for their assistance and ongoing commitment to keep our island safe.”

Dawson was released from jail after posting $200,000 bail on April 12. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

People with information about the incident are urged to call KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711. People who wish to remain anonymous can provide information by calling Crime Stoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300.
